The Intersection
Construction on Eldridge
The Short Version
The lanes that were closed on Eldridge last week will be reopened presently. However, they will be closed again in November and will not reopen until next summer.
The Longer Version
If you were like me, you were blindsided by the closing of the right turn lane from southbound Eldridge to westbound Memorial. Last Thursday, I contacted the Project Manager to find out what was happening and why. I arranged for an onsite meeting the next day (last Friday) with the Houston City Inspector, the Superintendent for Raytec (the new contractor) and a representative from our councilmember's office (who I had invited).
The requirement for the project is to sink two more shafts on Eldridge south of where the current ones are. The southernmost one will be right in the middle of the right turn lane as can be seen in the image below.
Both shafts were to be drilled concurrently in the next couple of weeks, which is why the lanes are closed now. After further discussions into this week, the plan is to now only sink the one shaft to the north and not the other that is in the right turn lane until November. As such, the lanes will be reopened until November. This will extend the project by two months, so don't expect completion until next summer. In the interim, the traffic management plan will be reexamined to see if the disruptions beginning in November can be minimized.
You can find out about this project and sign up for future notifications here. I would encourage you to sign up.

Storm Debris Pickup
Please call or use the 311 App to report Hurricane Beryl storm debris that needs to be picked up. The more 311 reports filed for Memorial Thicket, the better the chance we will have for an earlier pickup. You can see on the map that within Memorial Thicket, we have only six reported (which includes the pile behind the guardhouse).
Water Billing Update
A newsletter from a few months ago discussed the City of Houston water billing program due to the inoperability of many residential water meter remote read devices. If you are receiving bills on blue paper, it is an estimated bill whether you have a working remote read device or not. Once your device is determined to be operable, then you will receive a letter to that effect and actual billing will begin 60 days later. We received our 60-day notice letter a few weeks ago.
To check if you remote read device is working please visit improvewaterbills.org.
