WINTER DRIVING SAFETY
As we approach the potential for colder and maybe freezing weather, here are some driving tips to always remember:
1. Winterize early
Now is a great time to check your car before the weather changes severely. This should include assessing your battery and checking your antifreeze, windshield wipers and fluid, headlights and hazards, heater and defroster, brakes, tire pressure, and tire tread.
2. Check roads and weather
You probably have Apps for directions and weather, but you can also get road conditions from the TxDOT at DriveTexas. For weather tips and local conditions, you should visit the National Weather Service.
3. Plan ahead
Because not all Houstonians are seasoned winter-weather drivers, make sure to leave plenty of time to get where you are going. You will want to avoid routes that include bridges, ramps, and overpasses when frigid weather brings snow, ice, and sleet. If you can wait for better weather, you should.
4. Slow down, stay back
When conditions are severe, always reduce your speed and do not tailgate. If there is ice on the road, you will need at least three times as much space to stop. If you do start to skid, steer in the direction of the skid.
5. Keep an emergency kit
If you get stuck, the Texas Department of Insurance suggests that you stay in your car. You should keep a fully charged cell phone, charger, and a hand-crank or battery-operated radio handy in your car. It can also help to have jumper cables, a spare tire, flares, blankets, a working flashlight and batteries, cat litter or sand for traction, food and water, a first-aid kit, and dry matches.
